The Jeff Flaig Memorial Sponsorship
The sponsorship recipient exemplifies the character and values of the late Jeff Flaig. Jeff, who passed away in 2022, played at UMBC from 1982 to 1986. He was an unselfish, humble and dedicated spirit.
Flaig had tremendous perseverance. Diagnosed with cancer in high school, he continued to compete on his sports teams while enduring treatment. He would go on to play lacrosse at UMBC, earning All-America honors as a junior. He managed to keep an upbeat attitude throughout life, even while facing harsh adversity.
On and off the field, Jeff brought people together. He was the kind of individual who did not leave others out, and who made sure everyone around him felt welcome and at home. He was a loyal person who kept friends once he made them.
As a player and a coach, he put others before himself. He was willing to do the (often unseen) dirty work which allowed those around him to succeed. He was never one to brag, and let his actions do the talking. When he was given credit or acknowledgement, he was quick to mention the folks around him who contributed to his success.
Jeff believed in the power of team sports to impart important lessons, and taught hundreds of young men about life through the game of lacrosse. He emphasized character-building more than the scoreboard, and in doing so demonstrated how good character often translates to winning games. He encouraged selfless lacrosse: off-ball movement to give space for others, extra passes to turn tough shots into easy goals, communication and accountability on defense. He was a fiery competitor, yet always prioritized winning with integrity and as a team.
Jeff Flaig received the admiration from many without ever seeking it. He practiced everything he preached. The person receiving this sponsorship embodies the same values, and has the same positive rippling-effect on those around them.
